MISUK CHOE
BIO
Misuk is a visual artist and board-certified art therapist. Born in Seoul, South Korea, she lives and works between New York and Northwestern Connecticut. She has maintained a lifelong art practice, and her early interest in fiber art and design developed into a 20-year career in the fashion industry. A search for deeper meaning eventually led her to art therapy, where she integrates her enduring interests in art and psychology.
Working primarily in oil, Misuk’s practice encompasses figurative painting and still life, with still life serving as an ongoing way of refining perception and deepening her way of seeing. Her work draws from both Eastern and Western principles, merging traditional and contemporary sensibilities.
She holds an MA in Art Therapy from New York University and a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies from the City College of New York, CUNY. She studied oil painting through continuing education at the School of Visual Arts in New York.
STATEMENT
My work begins with observation in the outer world and moves inward. What starts in the visible often becomes a reflection of the interior.
As my practice continues to evolve, defining what my paintings are about remains an ongoing inquiry. What has stayed constant is my effort to hold a contemplative moment within a space that feels both unfamiliar and strangely known. I am drawn to an unnameable emotional resonance that I continue to pursue in each piece. At times it arrives unbidden; at others, it takes hours or days to surface. Meditation and reflection are integral to this process, offering clarity. The work often feels less like construction and more like alchemy.
As an artist and art therapist, I do not experience these roles as separate; each informs and sustains the other. Witnessing clients’ stories and accompanying their healing and growth is something I deeply value. The complexity of human experience humbles me and calls me to remain present. Through my painting, I seek to convey the emotional resonance of what we carry, individually and collectively, beyond what we can name.
